Meerapfel, the esteemed grower of Cameroon tobacco, is re-entering the cigar industry with a brand that bears the family name. The Belgian company is launching the Meerapfel cigar, which is intended to be exceptionally upscale. The Meerapfel family has long specialized in tobacco from Cameroon, known for its rarity, flavor, and distinctively toothy texture. Richard Meerapfel, who passed away in 2003, is credited with rescuing Cameroon tobacco from near extinction. His son Jeremiah, now chairman of Meerapfel, began planning this cigar brand nearly 20 years ago, following his father’s death. “This project was born the day my father passed,” says Jeremiah, who was 25 at the time and is now 44. Meerapfel aimed to create a cigar that epitomizes luxury and redefines traditional cigar-making and presentation methods. The result is a cigar crafted from some of the company’s oldest and most carefully preserved tobacco leaves.
