Ashton Estate Sungrown: Overview

Overview:

The Ashton Estate Sun Grown (ESG) was originally conceived in 2005 in celebration of the brands 20th anniversary. The cigar hit humidor shelf's the following year in 2006; with the 20-Year Salute, a 6.75 x 49 Churchill, to commemorate Ashton’s 20th anniversary. In each subsequent year following, an additional shape was introduced, including the 21-Year Salute (Robusto), 22-Year Salute (Pyramid), 23-Year Salute (Toro), and 24-Year Salute (Perfecto). What makes this cigar so special is undoubtedly its wrapper leaf. It shares the same wrapper as another iconic cigar Fuentes Opus X. The Dominican wrapper grown from Cuban seeds on a select Fuente family estate in the Dominican Republic under the watchful eye of cigar-making legend Carlito Fuente.

Tasting Notes:

The cigar begins with complex yet smooth flavors of cashew, honey and sweet graham cracker. These favors are balanced nicely by a subtle note of black pepper. As the cigar progresses a creaminess makes itself known along with what is one of my favorite tasting notes; roasted coffee. The smoke is extremely rich and chewy. The cigar really begins to ramp up min strength; although this is masked by its smoothness. However, by its end the cigar is approaching full in flavor and strength. Overall this is one of the most exceptional and complex cigars offered by Ashton.
